Hiring for Net Zero: Why Sports Clubs Need Dedicated Sustainability Staff — and How to Find Them

From the 2025/26 season, UEFA requires every club in European competition to appoint a Social & Environmental Sustainability Officer. The Premier League requires all 20 clubs to designate a senior employee to lead environmental sustainability strategy. Sport England requires its 130 national governing body partners to have robust sustainability action plans in place by March 2027 as a condition of continued funding. Sustainability in sport is no longer a passion project — it is a staffing requirement. And the clubs that have not yet hired for it are already behind.
